Cugel's Saga

  1. CUGEL'S SAGA: DJ - A black ink and gray pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. It appears as the wraparound dust jacket art for the book, "Cugel's Saga," by Jack Vance, published by Underwood-Miller in 1983.

I hope that Jack Vance liked the artwork I did for his books because I sure liked reading his stories. Over the years several writers whose stories I illustrated took the time to send me thank you letters, some even purchased my original drawings, and some I just gave the artwork to outright with my compliments.

But nobody's perfect! I was in a phone conversation one day with Jim Baen, who was editor of Galaxy magazine at that time, I asked him if any of the writers whose stories I illustrated have ever sent him negative comments about my illustrations, and he answered, "Yes, Jerry Pournelle hated the artwork you did on his serial, "Exiles to Glory".

A very long time ago I learned that "unanimity of opinion" does not exist in this world.; no author is liked by all, no artist is admired by all, No actor or movie is liked by all, no singer is liked by all, etc, etc. and there seems to be no exceptions. Amazing! So, whoever you are, whatever you do, you have to learn to take the blow, especially from the "haters," and go on.

Anyway, editor Jim Baen went on to tell me not to worry about Pournelle's opinion, he had a draw full of letters from other writers who requested that I do the illustrations for their stories and was sending me three more stories to illustrate for Galaxy magazine.
